At Avenues for Justice (AFJ), we understand the importance of providing a holistic continuum of care for our Participants. Through court advocacy, enrichment services, and daily HIRE Up programming at our community centers, we empower young people, ages 13 to 24, to overcome the systemic barriers they face as they navigate their paths to successful futures. Our individualized approach ensures that each Participant is supported each step of the way, from fulfilling their court mandates to engaging in meaningful employment and academic opportunities.

This week, we proudly spotlight Participant Max’s story of success. In November 2024, Max was mandated to AFJ through the New York City Law Department's Family Court Division’s “Diversion” program. Young people assigned to the Family Court Diversion program are mandated to community-based Alternative to Incarceration (ATI) organizations, such as AFJ, for a specific number of sessions or workshops. Last month, Max successfully completed his mandate and has continued to utilize AFJ’s services. Max participates in daily HIRE Up workshops at both community centers, recently completing AFJ’s 8-day job readiness curriculum. He is an illustration of what is possible when a Participant embraces ongoing support beyond their short Diversion mandate.

Max’s Path to Success

Max was 17 when he was referred to AFJ Harlem Court Advocate, Julia Price, by his attorney through the Queens Family Court Diversion program. His court mandate required him to complete 12 AFJ HIRE Up workshop sessions, after which his case would be dismissed. When Max walked through AFJ’s doors, his outgoing personality and infectious energy immediately resonated with staff and his peers alike.

From the onset, Max traveled between AFJ’s community centers in Harlem and the Lower East Side to attend daily programming. One of Max’s favorite HIRE Up workshops has been Teen Empowerment, led by facilitator Dennis Ibude, where Participants have heartfelt and open conversations on topics like gun violence, gang affiliation, social media, and school. Max was drawn to Dennis’ vibrant personality and his understanding of the challenges which young people face. Max also joined the debate team cohort facilitated by Reggie Chatman where he showcased his critical thinking and strong communication skills.

“Max is one of the most resilient and grounded young men I’ve ever worked with. His passion for trains, NYC’s subway system, and his journey of overcoming personal hardship are all truly inspiring. As he prepares to graduate, I couldn’t be prouder of his accomplishments.” ~Dennis Ibude, Teen Empowerment Facilitator

“Max is an extraordinary young person who has immense talent. From the moment he entered the debate workshop, he demonstrated a willingness to learn, commitment to the program, and wisdom that is well beyond his years. His participation has not only inspired his classmates, but also motivates me to try and be the best educator that I can be.”  ~Reggie Chatman, Debate Team Facilitator

Last month, Julia’s progress report to the court highlighted Max’s growth and his successful completion of the twelve mandated sessions. His case was dismissed by the Family Court judge. While some Diversion Participants choose to part ways after their case is dismissed, Max continued his journey with AFJ, determined to take full advantage of all the opportunities available to him.

Max's Growth

Since his case has been dismissed, Max has earned several certifications, including OSHA-30, Site Safety, Flaggers, and Scaffolding. Max was selected for AFJ’s paid internship cohort set to begin in May and was accepted into NYC’s Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP). Additionally, he is one of five Participants nominated for AFJ’s inaugural Leadership Council cohort which will run for 10 weeks and is designed to build critical skills in public speaking, problem-solving, collaborative thought, and self-representation.

Max has set his sights on working with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), a dream sparked at a young age by his fascination with buses and trains. Fueled by his determination and recent achievements, he’s building real momentum toward a career he’s passionate about. With support from Julia and AFJ’s Job Developer, Shantel, Max is preparing to take the MTA test this summer and exploring two-year college programs to further his education.

“Max is a light. You want him there in the room. Whether it’s staff, other Participants, or facilitators, he gets along with everybody. He is a great person and is so funny. You want to see him do well because he deserves to go very far.” ~Julia Price, AFJ Court Advocate

A Moment of Inspiration

One of Max’s most memorable moments at AFJ was during our “Women of Influence” panel for Women’s History Month where he had the opportunity to meet Paige Graves (General Counsel) and Anita Miller (Chief Labor and Employee Relations Officer) from the MTA.

"I had the chance to speak with Max. I was impressed by his confidence, wit and questions. During our conversation Max mentioned his interest in transportation, including the “Queens Bus Redesign” project and other transit focused issues. I shared with him that the 'Conference of Minority Transportation Officials' offers scholarships and free memberships to high school and college students." ~Anita Miller, MTA Chief Labor and Employee Relations Officer

Max’s Reflection

“No matter what legal situation you are in, you should try to get into AFJ. Everyone at AFJ actually cares and will change your perspective. How did I not know about this program sooner?” ~AFJ Participant, Max

Max’s journey is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when young people have access to opportunity and support. His continued engagement beyond his court mandate reflects the trust AFJ builds with every Participant. At AFJ, we are committed to creating a more just future for our Participants and the NYC communities we serve, where holistic support, court advocacy, and HIRE Up programming empower young people to shape the futures they envision for themselves.
