What Makes Avenues for Justice Successful:

The Mayor’s FY 2018 Management Report states that 1,754 youth under age 16 were admitted to detention at a cost of $1,688 per youth per day – nearly $616,120 on an annualized basis. Since each youth spent an average of 19 days in detention, New York City spent over $56 million on juvenile detention FY 2018. And New York States spends $353,000 (2014 data) annually to incarcerate one youth in one of its juvenile prisons, compared to the $21,206 (2014 data) spent by the city and state to educate one public school child each year.

  • Average annual cost for one bed in a secure NY juvenile detention center: $353,000.
  • 31% of youths released from a NYS juvenile facility stay out of prison.

  • It costs AFJ just $5,200 per year to provide life-changing support, 24-hours a day, seven days a week, to each of our youth.
  • Over 90% of AFJ graduates stay out of prison.
